Tyr (pronounced like a "tear" coming from your eye, according to Tim Brown) is a city-state.

[edit] Age of the Sorcerer-Kings

Tyr was ruled by King Kalak. The city was located on the western side of the Tablelands, near the Ringing Mountains, over a deep aquifer. Tyr was most famous for its iron mines, which produced small scrapings of metal for smelting. This iron was the lifeblood of the city, providing it with trade and with arms for its military.

By the old Calendar of Tyr, in the Year of Priest's Defiance in the 190th King's Age, King Kalak was murdered by a coalition including the slave gladiator Rikus, the magician Sadira, the templar Tithian, and the nobleman-psionicist Agis of Asticles. Shortly after the act, Tithian ascended to the position of king, and unilaterally freed all slaves of Tyr. The city went through a period of turmoil, eventually repelling advances from King Hamanu of Urik and organizing a system of councilors for government. The city adopted a new calendar celebrating its freedom -- the calendar of the Free Years. By the time of the revised Dark Sun setting's start, in the Free Year 11, Tithian had disappeared under mysterious circumstances, but the city carried on as a bastion of freedom, albeit a troubled one.
